Campaign Unavailable

We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Human Rights First.

The short explanation of this alert was:

On August 8th, 2007, one year before the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Human Rights First delivered 2,741 signatures to the Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations and China's Special Representative to Darfur. We continue to welcome participants in this petition. All new signatures will be delivered to both officials at a later date.

On August 8, one year from now, the world’s top athletes will meet in Beijing to compete for Olympic glory.  Meanwhile, China, the host country for the 2008 Olympiad, continues to invest in and support Sudan, a country whose government has been engaged for over four years in a violent campaign against its own people in Darfur region.

China can play an important role in resolving this crisis.

China seems to be warming up to constructive engagement with Sudan to bring an end to the mass atrocities in Darfur.  China has appointed a special representative to Darfur, Liu Guijin, and recently voted to authorize a joint U.N.-A.U. peacekeeping mission for Darfur.

There is much more that China can and must do to end the suffering in Darfur.  Sign our letter and ask China to use its unique role and influence to bolster the international peace process, hold the Government of Sudan accountable, and, ultimately, create a real change in the lives of the people in Darfur.
