The case of Rodi Alvarado, a Guatemalan survivor of domestic abuse seeking asylum in the United States, is currently pending before Attorney General John Ashcroft.  On February 19, 2004, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) filed a brief urging Attorney General Ashcroft to grant asylum to Ms. Alvarado. In its brief, the DHS urges Attorney General Ashcroft not to issue a broad decision that could impact other gender-based asylum cases and states that it plans to issue regulations soon that will provide guidance in cases involving similar issues.  Write to Attorney General Ashcroft and Secretary Ridge and urge them to protect refugees fleeing gender-based violence.
