The short explanation of this alert was:

Cuban authorities have threatened human rights lawyer Juan Carlos Gonzalez Leiva with jail if he does not put an end to his human rights activities or leave Cuba.

As the President of the Cuban Foundation for Human Rights, Gonzalez Leiva has been a vigorous human rights advocate and has lent critical support to other activists and journalists who have come under attack, including those detained during the spring 2003 clampdown.

Gonzalez Leiva was previously imprisoned and is currently serving a four-year sentence under house arrest. Gonzalez Leiva, who is blind, is kept under constant surveillance by the Cuban authorities and is subject to harassment and even violent assaults by mobs of civilians believed to be organized by the Cuban government.

Express your concern that the Cuban government continues to harass and intimidate courageous human rights defenders like Juan Carlos Gonzalez Leiva, and call on the authorities to lift the restrictions on his freedom of movement and expression.
