Iranian journalist and human rights activist Akbar Ganji was returned to Evin Prison in Tehran on September 3. In prison for over five years, Ganji was transferred to Milad Hospital on July 17 in order to receive urgently-needed medical care, following weeks of international protest from human rights organizations and world leaders. Ganji recently ended a two-month long hunger strike to protest his wrongful imprisonment and inhumane treatment in jail. Human Rights First is extremely concerned about Akbar Ganji's health, given that he suffers from an acute respiratory condition and his health has severely deteriorated since his detention in 2000. According to Ganji's wife, no one has been allowed to visit him since August 23. Akbar Ganji was tried and imprisoned as a result of his work to expose and bring to justice government officials involved in the murder of intellectuals and journalists in the 1990s, which came to be known in Iran as the "serial murders." The Iranian authorities that have imprisoned Ganji are responsible for his health and safety. Join Human Rights First in calling for the Iranian authorities to release Akbar Ganji.
