human rights first Defender Alert
The New Name of Lawyers Committee for Human Rights

We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Human Rights First.

The short explanation of this alert was:

A few weeks ago we asked you to urge the international community to act on the crisis in Burma.  As a result of the outcry from people like you:

* In New York, the U.N. Security Council successfully sent a Special Envoy to Burma;
* In Geneva, the U.N. Human Rights Council called for another envoy to visit and urged the junta to halt the use of violence
* The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued an uncharacteristically strong statement expressing "revulsion" over reports of the use of violent force against peaceful demonstrators.

But the monasteries around Rangoon remain empty:  while international attention and concern is unprecedented, it is not enough.

According to unconfirmed reports, dozens and perhaps hundreds of peaceful demonstrators were killed during the crackdown - far more than officials have acknowledged.  The authorities have admitted detaining thousands of those who marched in the streets to protest the regime. Many remain detained in unknown locations, including hundreds of Buddhist monks and 12 members of a human rights education group.

Please call on Burma's neighbors to keep the pressure on Burma to lift restrictions on the monks who participated in recent protests; release all political prisoners in Burma; lift conditions for a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi; and avoid using violence to quell peaceful dissent in the event of future protests.
