This courageous human rights defender, the more than 1000 political prisoners detained, and the hundreds of thousands of people in Burma engaged in peaceful protests against an oppressive military regime, deserve the freedom and democracy they have struggled for since the 1988 uprising. Those peaceful protests ended in the slaughter of 3000 people. Already, news reports indicate that the army has started to use violence against the protestors. Let us act now to avoid another bloody crackdown. United Nations Security Council members are meeting later today in a special session to discuss the situation in Burma. Please call on Security Council members to take the strongest possible measures to prevent further violence. Urge them to authorize a special mission to Burma by U.N. Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari; to call for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi; and to demand an end to violence against peaceful protestors.
