human rights first Defender Alert
The New Name of Lawyers Committee for Human Rights

We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Human Rights First.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Ruslan Badalov directs the Chechen Committee for National Salvation (CCNS), a human rights organization based in Ingushetia, Russia.  At great personal risk, the staff of CCNS disseminates reports about ongoing human rights violations in Chechnya.

On April 11, a court will decide whether press releases issued by CCNS violate a civil law on countering extremism.  If the court rules against CCNS, the organization will be closed immediately.  Furthermore, Mr. Badalov is likely to face criminal prosecution under counter-extremism laws - just like Stanislav Dmitrievsky, the Russian human rights defender who was convicted of "inciting ethnic hatred" in February.

When Human Rights First met with Mr. Badalov last week, he asked for our help so that he will be able to continue his human rights work

According to Mr. Badalov, letters to the Russian authorities sent in September 2004 and in April 2005 by hundreds of DAN members saved CCNS from closure during these politically motivated proceedings.  Mr. Badalov believes that your voice can make a real difference at this critical time.
