Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Human Rights First. The short explanation of this alert was: UPDATE: The Appeals Court reviewing Amir Yaghoub-Ali’s case has suspended implementation of his one-year prison sentence for four years, during which time Yaghoub-Ali is required to report on a regular basis to a local branch of the Intelligence Ministry. Should Yaghoub-Ali fail to report to the authorities or be arrested again, he will immediately have to serve his prison term. Not only has the Court failed to overturn Yaghoub-Ali’s original conviction, but it also has subjected him to a high level of monitoring and control, with the apparent objective of pressuring Yaghoub-Ali to abandon his activities for gender equality.
Amir Yaghoub-Ali, a 21-year-old student and gender equality activist, will serve a one-year prison sentence unless his conviction is overturned. Yaghoub-Ali is the first man to have been arrested in connection with the One Million Signatures Campaign, which calls for an end to gender discrimination in Iranian laws. To date, at least 44 members of the Signatures Campaign have faced harassment and prosecution at the hands of the authorities. The crackdown on gender equality activists comes during a heightened climate of oppression against activists and human rights defenders of all kinds. Recent incidents include:
Please call on the Iranian government to overturn the conviction of Yaghoub-Ali for his nonviolent activities in support of women's rights, and to take immediate steps to halt the repression against other human rights defenders.
