We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Human Rights First.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Through new legislation and other forms of harassment the Sudanese government is attempting to prevent independent organizations from documenting and publicizing human rights violations.  Human rights defenders have also been arrested, beaten, and "disappeared" because of their work.

On April 11, 2006, the Sudanese government froze the assets of a local women's rights organization called the Women's Awareness Raising Group (AWOON) - Red Sea, making it impossible for the organization to continue its work.  AWOON plays a vital role in promoting women's rights in Sudan and addresses critical issues facing Sudanese women through human rights training, advocacy and free legal assistance.

At a time when the government of Sudan is responsible for mass killings, torture, rape, and other serious human rights violations and crimes against humanity, it is vital that nongovernmental organizations like AWOON are allowed to function freely.

Help us put pressure on the Sudanese government to stop persecuting human rights defenders by demanding that the assets of AWOON - Red Sea be released and that the organization be allowed to resume its operations.
